November is Mustache Month

This month is Mustache Month! But, what does a mustache say about a man? Here's a list of what to expect from a man with a mustache:

full beard--distinguished, scholarly
goatee--outdated and in the past
scruffy--trendsetter
chin line--give me attention
thick mustache--confident
handlebar--pleasant and fun
horseshoe--rebellious

Although your students may not have mustaches yet, there's no reason you can't celebrate the holiday. Take time to make your own mustache, do an interview with a mustached man, or build a timeline of men with distinguished mustaches.

Happy Mustache Month!

"Talkin' Turkey"

Gobble, gobble, gobble...that's not the "Talkin' Turkey" referenced in this week's blogpost title. So, what is "Talkin' Turkey"? It's a fun way to get students to use their writing skills over the Thanksgiving holiday break.

Thanksgiving is a time for fun and family. I remember waking to the smells of turkey and pumpkin pie. I would peer out the window in anticipation of aunts, uncles, and cousins. As the house filled with people, the table was set and an abundant feast appeared on the table. A silence feel over the room and Thanksgiving grace was said. Then, it was time to carve the bird!

After a great meal, elders settled in the living room to watch football while youngsters headed outdoors for an annual game of touch football. Later on, we set up the card table for friendly competitive games of Moon (dominoes) and WaHoo! As the sun set, we bundled in coats and gloves, gave handshakes, hugs, and kisses, and declared we would see each other at the next big holiday get together on December 25. But, let's not rush it...

Teaching and Honoring Veteran's Day

For students to grasp the meaning of Veteran's Day, begin with meaningful dialogue. Invite veterans into your class to speak and meet students!

Ask for community, parent, sibling, and relative volunteers. Meeting veterans one-on-one creates respect for our armed service members and former veterans. Ask veterans to tell stories that focus on building positive relationships, cultural and travel experiences, and daily life in the armed services. Encourage volunteers to bring mementos and photographs. Also, honor class visitors with student-made cards, poems, and writings that express gratitude for their services to us and our country. Make Veteran's Day special for everyone!

If your area holds a Veteran's Day parade, plan a field trip and take part in the remembrance festivities, or hold your own class parade (see below). Remember to remind students of the importance of Veteran's Day--to honor those who served our country to defend our democracy and freedom!
